Estate Cleanouts in Wilmington, DE

An estate cleanout is the full clearing of a home after someone passes away, moves to assisted living, or downsizes completely. This means going through every room, sorting belongings, and removing everything that isn't being kept. It's one of the bigger jobs in the removal business.

What to Expect With Estate Cleanouts
  • A smaller home or apartment can be cleared in one day. A larger Wilmington home with decades of belongings (attics, basements, closets full of stuff) can take 2 to 3 days. The more rooms and the more packed in, the longer it takes.
  • Someone from the family or the executor usually needs to be available, at least at the start, to flag anything that should be kept or set aside. We won't throw out documents, jewelry, or anything that looks like it might matter without checking. But we need someone to check with.
  • This is a physically and emotionally heavy job. We move through it room by room and keep things organized so it doesn't feel like chaos. Expect the house to look like a work zone during the process.
Estate Cleanouts
Why Estate Cleanouts Matters
  • A property that needs to be cleared before it can sell, rent, or transfer to new owners is sitting there costing money every day it stays full. In the Wilmington area, a vacant home with a house full of stuff is not ready for the next step. Every week it stays that way is a week of carrying costs with no return.
  • Important documents and valuables hide in places nobody thinks to look. Tax records, insurance papers, jewelry, and even cash turn up in coat pockets, inside books, in kitchen drawers, and behind things in closets. A crew that just grabs and hauls without looking through the space first is throwing that stuff away.
  • An estate cleanout done right means a property handed back clean and ready to move on. Done wrong, it means the family has to come back, finish the mess, deal with disposal issues, and deal with whatever got thrown away that shouldn't have been. Getting it done correctly the first time saves a second trip and a lot of headaches.
Why Estate Cleanouts Matters
How Scrap Squad Handles Estate Cleanouts
  • We sort before we haul. Keep, donate, and dispose are three separate piles from the start. Usable furniture, clothing, and household items go to Wilmington area charities (Goodwill, Habitat for Humanity ReStore) instead of straight to the landfill. A cleanout crew that skips sorting and dumps everything is wasting a lot of stuff that could go somewhere useful.
  • We do a room by room walkthrough before we start removing anything. This catches important documents, valuables, or sentimental items that are easy to miss when a house is full. Coat pockets, book shelves, kitchen drawers, all of it gets checked.
  • We leave the property swept and cleaned after the job. The goal is to hand back a property that's ready for the next step (sale, rental, whatever comes next) without the family having to come back and finish the cleaning.

Common Questions About Estate Cleanouts
How long does a typical junk removal job take?
Single-room cleanouts (garage, basement, one bedroom) typically take 1-2 hours. Whole-house estate cleanouts take 4-8 hours for an average 3-bedroom home, and we may schedule this over 2 days. Curbside pickup of a few large items takes 20-30 minutes. Time increases significantly with stairs—add 30-60 minutes for every floor above ground level without elevator access.
Do I need to be home during the removal?
Preferably yes for the initial walkthrough so we can confirm exactly what's being removed and provide a final price. After that, you can leave if needed—just ensure we have clear access to all areas and items. For estate cleanouts where families may find the process emotional, many clients prefer to be off-site after the initial walkthrough.
What can't you take?
We can't remove hazardous materials like paint cans with liquid paint (dried paint cans are fine), chemicals, propane tanks, asbestos, or biological waste. We don't remove items still attached to the structure—you need a contractor to demo built-in cabinets or flooring first. Vehicle removal requires a separate towing service. In Wilmington, we also can't take loose yard waste unless bagged—that's a separate collection service.
What happens to my stuff after you remove it?
Usable items in good condition go to local donation centers like Goodwill, Habitat for Humanity ReStore, or specialized charities. Metals, cardboard, and certain plastics go to recycling facilities. Appliances go to licensed processors who remove hazardous components before scrapping metal. Everything else goes to permitted landfills—we provide documentation of disposal locations if you need it for estate or business records.
Can you remove items from inside my house or just from the curb?
We provide full-service removal from anywhere on your property—inside the house, basement, attic, garage, shed, or yard. That's what differentiates professional junk removal from curbside pickup services. We handle all the heavy lifting, navigating stairs, and maneuvering through doorways. You point at what goes, and we handle the rest.
