Garage Cleanouts in Wilmington, DE

What to Expect With Garage Cleanouts
  • Most garage cleanouts take 2 to 4 hours. A two car garage that's completely packed from floor to ceiling will take longer (a full day is possible). A one car garage with moderate clutter is usually a half day or less.
  • You'll probably want to walk through it with us at the start and flag anything you want to keep. Once we start pulling stuff out, it goes fast. Things that have been buried in the back of a garage for years have a way of turning up at that point.
  • It's going to be dusty. Garages accumulate dust, cobwebs, and sometimes rodent activity over time. Wear shoes you don't mind getting dirty and expect some mess during the process.
Garage Cleanouts
Why Garage Cleanouts Matters
  • A garage full of junk means no garage. That's a parking space you're not using, which in Wilmington where street parking is tight and on-street overnight parking rules vary by neighborhood, is actually money. Getting the garage cleared out means getting that space back.
  • Old tires, broken appliances, and scrap metal sitting in a garage for years are not just clutter. Tires are a breeding ground for mosquitoes when it rains. Broken appliances and chemicals stored long term can be a fire hazard or an environmental one. The longer it sits, the bigger the potential problem.
  • A garage full of stuff is also a magnet for more stuff. Family members, roommates, and even neighbors start piling things in there because there's already a pile. Clearing it out and keeping it clear starts with actually getting rid of what's already there.
Why Garage Cleanouts Matters
How Scrap Squad Handles Garage Cleanouts
  • We sort as we go. Tools in decent shape, usable shelving, and anything with resale or donation value gets separated from broken junk and trash. Most garage cleanouts have a surprising amount of recyclable or donatable material mixed in with the garbage.
  • Scrap metal (old tools, metal shelving, car parts, fencing) gets pulled out and taken to recycling instead of the landfill. This is one of the easiest services to find recyclable material in because garages are where people stash metal stuff they don't know what to do with.
  • We load the truck tight. A garage cleanout can generate a lot of volume and it all has to fit. We pack efficiently so we aren't making extra trips for half full loads.

Common Questions About Garage Cleanouts
How long does a garage cleanout take?
Single-car garages that are moderately full take 2-3 hours. Packed single-car garages (floor to ceiling with narrow paths) take 3-5 hours. Two-car garages range from 4-6 hours depending on density. Workshop garages with heavy equipment, full tool collections, and built-in storage take longer—6-8 hours. Time increases if you need to review many items for keep/toss decisions.
Do I need to sort or organize anything before you arrive?
No, but it saves time and money if you pre-sort items you're definitely keeping versus definitely discarding. If you're unsure about many items, being present during the cleanout helps us work faster—we can ask quick keep/toss questions rather than setting everything aside for your review. For estate cleanouts, having a family member who knows what's valuable speeds the process significantly.
What can't you remove from garages?
We can't take liquid hazardous materials (paint with liquid, solvents, gasoline, pesticides, pool chemicals). We can't remove items bolted or attached to the structure—built-in cabinets and permanent shelving need a handyman first. We can't take propane tanks (many hardware stores accept them) or vehicle batteries (auto parts stores recycle free). Non-running vehicles need a towing service. We can remove everything else.
Can you remove items if I'm not home?
Working tools, sporting equipment, and usable household items go to Goodwill, Habitat ReStore, or specialized charities. Scrap metal (old bikes, metal shelving, car parts) goes to recycling facilities. Cardboard and certain plastics get recycled. Broken, contaminated, or unusable items go to licensed landfills. We provide disposal documentation if you need it for estate records or tax deductions.
How much does a garage cleanout cost?
Lightly filled single-car garage (quarter to half full): $200-350. Packed single-car garage (floor to ceiling): $400-600. Moderately filled two-car garage: $500-750. Packed two-car garage: $800-1,200. Workshop garages with heavy equipment add $100-300 depending on item weight and disposal requirements. Hazardous material disposal is your responsibility after we set it aside. Price depends on volume, not hours, so efficient loading benefits you.
